Karen Bate, Founder & CEO
A former journalist and Congressional press secretary with more than 25 years experience in nonprofit and corporate communications, Karen Bate rebrands companies and nonprofits; positions organizations to achieve their mission and objectives; manages the design and use of websites, publications and videos; garners key media placements; and harnesses the variety of social media tools and influencers to tell her clients’ stories and inspire others to support them. “Great Ideas for Good Causes” is not just a company tagline, it is the guiding philosophy of her work.
Karen is also Founder & Chief Inspiration Officer for Awesome Women Entrepreneurs (AWE), a professional networking group with five chapters in the DC metro are, including the original Arlington, VA chapter with more than 150 women business owners as members. More new chapters are starting around the U.S. in 2018. She co-hosts the weekly AWE Radio Show and podcast, and serves on the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) Development Committee, as well as on the Board of Advisors for Amman Imman: Water is Life. An active member of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce and other professional groups, Karen is also a 2010 graduate of Leadership Arlington.
Dora Muhammad, Marketing & Social Media Manager
Dora is a blogger, poet & published author, social media guru and campaign specialist. She loves getting behind a camera lens to document life and human interest stories. She brings more than 20 years of communications and marketing experience to the team. Her creativity is enhanced by her B.A. in Journalism and Documentary Photography, Master in Public Administration, and studies in International Law and Human Rights.
A Harlem native and daughter of Indo-Caribbean immigrants from Trinidad, Dora founded The AWARE Project (Advocacy for Women’s Activism, Rights and Empowerment) to champion women’s rights, child welfare and human rights, using visual art as a catalyst for her advocacy campaigns.
Jean Sa-Nganet, Summer Intern
As a senior at Virginia Tech majoring in Public Relations with a concentration in marketing, Jean embraces the university’s ideal of Ut Prosim – That I May Serve. She’s using her liberal arts education and experience at KB Concepts to further develop her skills, and hopes to own her own PR firm one day.
Mariela Echeverria, Social Media, Graphic Design
A graduate of George Mason University with a B.A. in Communications, Mariela provides social media, graphic design, event coordination and brand development support for KB Concepts. She has a passion for innovation and is always researching the latest communications trends.
Mariela is an Arlington native who loves the area and its easy access to downtown DC. During her free time, she enjoys exercising and volunteering at a local animal rescue organization.
Catherine MacDonald, Research, Writing, Strategy
A former journalist, Catherine MacDonald is a gerontologist who specializes in communications strategy, community partnerships and evidence-based solutions. Her work focuses on social connectedness, technology integration and social justice. She provides crucial research, editing and marketing strategy support for KB Concepts.
Catherine’s career (and life) milestones so far include: a white paper sponsored by KB Concepts for Offender Aid and Restoration on the lack of reintegration support for older ex-offenders; an innovative presentation on autonomous vehicles as tools for social justice; and an appearance on an episode of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills as part of our work with the National Race to End’s Women’s Cancer.
